Shri Gorakhnath Mandir, Gorakhpur

Shri Gorakhnath Mandir, located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the legendary yogi and saint Guru Gorakhnath, a prominent figure in the Nath tradition. The temple is not only a major spiritual center but also a cultural and historical landmark, with roots tracing back to the 12th century. It is believed that Guru Gorakhnath meditated at this very site, and over the centuries, the temple complex has evolved, particularly under the leadership of Mahant Digvijay Nath and Mahant Avedyanath, who played key roles in its restoration and expansion. The city of Gorakhpur itself is named after the saint, emphasizing his deep connection to the region.

Architecturally, the temple is spread over 52 acres and features a grand main hall with beautifully carved pillars, a sanctum housing a white marble idol of Guru Gorakhnath, and a sacred flame known as the “Divya Jyoti,” symbolizing eternal spiritual knowledge. The temple also includes smaller shrines, a holy pond named Mansarovar, and facilities for meditation and yoga. Spiritually, the temple remains vibrant with daily rituals such as the Mangal Aarti, Bhog Aarti, and Shayan Aarti, and it promotes the Nath philosophy of self-discipline and service.

The most notable event at the temple is the Makar Sankranti celebration, marked by the month-long Khichdi Mela. During this time, devotees offer khichdi to the saint, which is later distributed as prasad. The fair draws millions of pilgrims and features cultural events, religious discourses, and community meals. Beyond its religious role, the temple also serves society through initiatives like the Gorakhnath Chikitsalaya (a charitable hospital), educational institutions, a gaushala (cow shelter), and free food distribution, reflecting its enduring commitment to public welfare.
